The story

On the same month long journey up Namibia's closed Atlantic coast, Koos van der Lende found this field of pebbles on soft sand. Every footprint here stays: the wind fills the hollow, but the pebbles never return to where they were. So he tiptoed from rock to rock.

While his guide went fishing a kilometre away, nature conservation officers arrived and were furious to find a photographer alone in the protected area, though his permits were in order.

What makes Serenus truly distinctive, however, is not only how it was photographed, but how it came into being. Photographed on film, the image was part of a batch sent for traditional E-6 processing. During development, an unforeseen accident occurred in the darkroom: a brief exposure to ambient light caused a natural solarisation of the film. What would normally be considered a complete loss transformed this frame in an unexpected and remarkable way.

The effect subtly altered the tonal balance of the image, softening highlights into muted greys and lending the sky a deeper, more atmospheric presence. Initially dismissed by the artist as unusable, Serenus later revealed itself as the one image in which the process had worked in perfect harmony with the subject.

In this sense, Serenus is not only the result of intention and craft, but also of chance, a reminder that some of the most compelling moments in art arise when control gives way to grace. It stands as a quiet testament to patience, imperfection, and the rare beauty that can emerge from an unrepeatable moment.

“It is beyond what you can imagine. It is like something from a film, out of this world.”
— Koos van der Lende

Koos van der Lende

Koos van der Lende Koos van der Lende photographs on a 6 × 17 cm panoramic camera, entirely by hand, and nothing is altered afterwards. For eighteen years he worked alone in the wild places of Southern Africa, eight to ten weeks at a time, carrying three hundred rolls of film that hold four pictures each. More about the artist

Will I pay VAT or import tax?
