This is one of Koos van der Lende's favourite pictures, as much for the adventure around it as for the picture itself. The Himba told him there was no road down to the Kunene. He went anyway, digging ruts for his wheels on the steep slopes, and reached the river out of water and exhausted.
Overnight, rain inland turned the river into a roaring flood of mud. That evening, in the rain under a beach umbrella, he asked the Lord for a breakthrough. The sun broke in from the Atlantic side and the scene turned from cold blue to yellow, orange and at last deep red. This frame sits between the blue and the red. Only a graduated filter was used.

To Koos, this photograph is more than a beautiful landscape, it is a testimony to the grandeur of creation and the grace of a single, unrepeatable moment. Unlike digital images that often require enhancement, this scene was captured exactly as it was: raw, vivid, and real. Film preserved the intensity and honesty of the colours, so striking that even Koos himself was overwhelmed when he saw the processed result weeks later.
This image, one of fewer than thirty from a two month journey, holds a particularly sacred place in the artist’s heart. It evokes a sense of wonder that he longs to share, not for the sake of the image alone, but to offer others a glimpse of the Creator’s hand in nature.
A Glimpse of Glory is not just a photograph, it is a visual echo of Koos' belief in divine beauty, and a reminder that some moments are given only once, never to return. A true moment of grace.
“Please, just give me your best light. It is one chance.”

Koos van der Lende Koos van der Lende photographs on a 6 × 17 cm panoramic camera, entirely by hand, and nothing is altered afterwards. For eighteen years he worked alone in the wild places of Southern Africa, eight to ten weeks at a time, carrying three hundred rolls of film that hold four pictures each. More about the artist
Chosen for the same feeling, not only the same subject.
