summer-time
Summer Time

Summer Time comes out of the way people live in Cape Town, a beautiful cosmopolitan city. The one thing that is evident here, in this province above all, is that Capetonians really love the outdoors, and there is nothing better than a relaxed afternoon down at one of the public pools, or one of the tidal pools with crystal clear water, on a summer's day that only Cape Town can deliver. There is almost a sharpening of the colour of the light, which means every colour turns vibrant and fresh. It is a memory you live with, and it is what you yearn for in the winter months, when you cannot wait for summer to show up. Then it arrives, and you lap it up and squeeze out every ounce of what summer has to offer. Ask any Capetonian and they will tell you exactly what this painting is about.

The painting looks straight down into the water as a swimmer enters it, arms stretched ahead, in a red costume against the turquoise. The yellow deck cuts across one corner, and the chrome handrails of the pool ladder throw a long shadow back across it. Martin Osner painted it in ink and acrylic on metal, laying the paint on thickly with a knife, so the water carries the mark of every stroke and the surface shifts as you move past it.

Artist: Martin Osner

Original, one of one, signed by the artist, on the painting

Ink and acrylic on metal, painted thickly in impasto

104 × 62.4 cm | 41" × 25", framed

Summer Time has just been completed and will be shown in Resonance, an art exhibition at Osner Gallery in Hout Bay, which opens on Saturday 28 November 2026 and runs until 9 January 2027.

Martin Osner has worked as a fine art photographer and painter since 1984, from his gallery in Hout Bay, Cape Town.
