Koos van der Lende keeps almost every sign of people out of his landscapes, but abandoned structures like this one draw him in, because they look so foreign in the desert.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHe made it in the middle of the day, for the deepest blue sky and the whitest sand, low to the ground so the tufts of grass and the wind ripples lead you in. Koos van der Lende saw a picture of the wreck in a magazine as Angola opened up after the war, and knew he had to go.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHe drove alone along the coast for more than a week, crossing a fifty kilometre stretch that can only be passed at low tide, until he saw her rise out of the sea mist. He spent five days with the wreck. Here he lifted the boat clean away from the sea, under a moving sky.
