Kubu Island rises out of the Makgadikgadi pans, kilometres of clay that flood in the rainy season and fill with flamingos, pelicans and water birds. In the dry season you can reach it, but the crust that carries you on foot can swallow a car.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhile the others settled in among the rocks, Koos walked out to the baobabs. The upside down tree, as African legend calls it, can live four or five thousand years. Its bark is smooth and soft, and there is no wood in it to burn, only cork. In times of drought, elephants break into the trunks for moisture. The exposure ran for two minutes in the evening, and a little falcon sat perfectly still in the branches. In the harsh daylight the shadows of other trees fell across these two baobabs, so he waited until well after sunset.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFifteen or twenty minutes after the sun has gone, when the last magenta has left the sky, an exposure can run for many minutes. That is time enough for Koos to walk into the frame dressed in black, which the film does not register, paint the trees with light and step out again. Facing into the early morning light, Koos let the tree fall into silhouette while the rock kept its warm colour. Not far from the Nwanedi reserve stands a tree said to be at least 5,000 years old, now fenced off to protect it from careless visitors. Koos van der Lende returned to Nwanedi again and again in winter for these great old trees.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor this one he faced straight into the sun. The day before, he worked out exactly where the sun should sit to balance the trees, and the next day he set up eight reflector boards to send light back onto the trunk. Koos calls this his art version.
